Regarding Dave's comment on the film's skewering of the art world not really landing: Having worked at a fine art auction house that sold a lot of chairs, I have to say it's depicted quite accurately. Would surprise you how much some collectors are willing to pay for old chairs. Seems really clear that Fumi is based on Yayoi Kusama or Yoko Ono, at least in her look and vibe. George's father was probably based on George Nakashima or Isamu Noguchi, both very prominent Japanese American designers who made a lot of very celebrated chairs.
